Our Active School Campaign began in 2013. This year we are working towards obtaining our second Active Schools Flag. The aim of the Active Schools Flag is to encourage schools to be more active, more often. This links in with all of the work we are doing throughout the year on Healthy Living- being active, getting exercise, taking care of ourselves.
Our Active School Motto
Be Active stay alive get up and go outside
All teachers in our school are working off the same calendar for the teaching of the Physical Education curriculum. Each term, there is a focus on different strands.
Term 1: Games, Water Safety and Outdoor & Adventure
Term 2: Outdoor & Adventure, Dance
Term 3: Athletics, Gymnastics
Our aim is to give a variety of PE lessons throughout the year but unfortunately we are very limited, as we don’t have an indoor facility and weather can be against us.
Our school is very fortunate to have a strong link with the local GAA club, where an outside coach comes into the school and coaches the pupils on a weekly basis in camogie, hurling and football. We are also very fortunate to have a strong link with the Sports Partnership, Waterford County Board where their officers come into the school to promote games and cycling. The school promotes athletics and participates in the Primary West Waterford Athletics competition and children are given the opportunity to stay back after school one day a week for athletic training for a period of six weeks. This year we have been very fortunate to attend our local gymnastics gym where the children took part in many training sessions.

On Wednesday 13th June Garranbane 5th Class cycled along the Dungarvan to Waterford Greenway as far as Durrow. We were accompanied by four teachers and Garvin who led the cycle. Gavin stopped at different locations and told us some very interesting facts about the area. Matthew’s Dad gave us refreshments along the way and we stopped for ice-creams at the picnic area outside O’ Mahony’s pub. The weather was lovely and we had a really fun day.
All the children participated in Zumba Dancing with Inga on Wednesday 20th June. It was wonderful to see both the boys and the girls enjoying dancing so much. And of course all the staff had fun too! Many thanks to Inga and well done boys and girls on all the great moves!
